Consultation & Collaboration

Strengthening grief literacy through consultation, partnerships and community collaboration.

Supporting Organizations and Communities in Providing Grief Support and Enhancing Grief Literacy

AWC works with organizations across Canada and internationally to strengthen grief support and build grief-informed systems. Our team provides education and consulting to schools, health care teams, agencies, and community groups seeking to respond to grief with clarity, compassion, and confidence. Support can range from a focused one-hour consultation to larger, multi-phase projects that help organizations build sustainable, grief-informed practices. Through this work, we help extend grief literacy beyond individual support and into the environments where people learn, work, and receive care.

How We Support Organizations
Our work with organizations is flexible and responsive. We provide guidance and training that helps teams feel prepared and confident in supporting grieving individuals, students, families, and staff members. Our goal is to facilitate and support organizations in becoming grief literate.
  • Staff Training and Education. Presentations and training materials tailored to an organization’s needs that help teams understand how to best support grief related to both death and non-death losses, including what to say and what not to say to someone who is grieving.
  • Educational Events. Presentations ranging from an hour to multi day workshops for professional groups, conferences, and community gatherings focused on strengthening grief literacy.
  • Manual and Procedure Reviews and Edits. Review and refinement of grief-related policies, procedures, and response materials (including compassionate or tragedy response protocols) to ensure they are clear, informed by current literature and grief-literate.
  • Grief Debriefs. Facilitated individual or group conversations after a death or difficult loss that create space for connecting, processing, and resourcing within teams.
  • Clinical Consultation / Supervision. One-off or ongoing consultation for professionals and volunteers supporting grieving individuals and families, offering guidance, case discussion, and skilled support.
  • Therapy Sessions. Individual, family, or group therapy for people navigating serious illness, death, and grief, offered as a third party for other providers.
  • Consultation on Grief-Informed Systems. Guidance in developing policies, curricula, and organizational practices that honour grief and foster compassionate, stigma-reducing cultures.
