Frequently Asked Questions

AWC Grief Support

You can explain therapy as a safe place where children can talk, play, draw, or ask questions about their feelings and experiences. Therapists help kids understand what is happening in their lives and support them in expressing thoughts and feelings that can feel confusing or overwhelming.

The relationship between you and your therapist is the most important factor in your care. While most clients continue with their initial therapist match, you are never locked in. If at any point the fit doesn’t feel right, contact our Client Coordinator. We will transition you to another member of our team quickly and without question.

The first session is typically a gentle introduction to your therapist and to grief therapy. Your therapist will learn about you and your story. There is no pressure to share more than you feel ready to. Grief therapy often involves a combination of bearing witness, validating one’s experiencing and providing guidance and resources.

Many extended health benefit plans cover psychotherapy or social work services. Coverage varies depending on your provider and plan, so we recommend contacting your insurance company directly to confirm what services are included and whether a referral is required.

Psychotherapy services provided by Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers are not covered by OHIP. However, many clients are able to access reimbursement through their extended health benefit plans.

If you live outside Ontario we may still be able to support you depending on which province you reside in so please contact us to explore further.

We are grateful to collaborate with these organizations in supporting individuals, families, and communities through grief.
